Notorious SiriProxy Plugin Makes Siri A Rapper

The best thing about open-source and crowd-sourcing is that there is no limit to the amount of creativity and development a product/feature can achieve once subject to public development, thanks to SiriProxy Plugin hack independent developers are creating amazing stuff like controlling their roomscomputers, and even cars.
To get things a notch above iPhone Hacker robb created a "Siri Hack" for the Music Hack Day 2011, Robb used the SiriProxy and developed "Notorious Siri" plugin which raps the "Notorious B.I.G.’s Hypnotize song". Full video after the jump.

Google confirms no affiliation with Carrier IQ

Here’s another update to the whole Carrier IQ news blowup in the past week (this time it’s Google’s turn, instead of Apple). Word on the street is that Google has confirmed that they themselves have no affiliation whatsoever with Carrier IQ, and that Nexus devices do not included the software. So this is essentially Google officially distanced itself from any responsibility for the tracking software from Carrier IQ. We wonder what Carrier IQ’s response will be, especially after Senator Al Franken called the company out just this afternoon.
We do not have an affiliation with CarrierIQ. Android is an open source effort and we do not control how carriers or OEMs customize their devices.
After having being found on numerous handsets currently offered on the market, Carrier IQ news has basically blown up this past week. While Verizon has claimed that Carrier IQ isn’t installed on their devices, Apple, RIM, Nokia, Windows Mobile, and most Android devices do indeed show evidence of the tracking software. Do SlashGear readers own any of the aforementioned smartphone devices? Which ones? Have you found the Carrier IQ tracking software on your device yet?
RIM, Nokia, HP, and now, finally Google are all striving to distance themselves from Carrier IQ. To reiterate, on the carrier end, Verizon has disclaimed usage of the software for tracking purposes, while Sprint claims that it uses the software for “network performance maintenance” only. We wonder what kind of network performance maintenance required user device tracking. But nevertheless, we’ll keep you updated if more Carrier IQ news emerges soon.

gujrat gov offers free opinion for addict

Ironical as it may sound, 600 drug addicts in Surat will be offered supplements of cocaine and heroin free by the state government on Thursday. This is part of a unique experiment being initiated in the diamond city where opium content will be provided in tablet form to keep the addicts on a high and prevent them from exposing them to sustained high risk of contracting HIV virus through use of unsafe needles and syringes!

The project, first of its kind in Gujarat, will be launched on World AIDS day. Registered drug addicts will be given tablets of methadone and buprenorphine, which has opium content and considered substitutes for heroin and cocaine addiction at the Drug addicts De-addiction and Oral Substitution Theory (DOST) centre, which will begin operations at psychiatry department of Government Medical College (GMC).

A 2009 survey in Surat showed that 2,000 drug addicts used syringes to inject themselves with drugs. Some 600 of these joined a prevention programme for HIV AIDS in which they were given sterilized syringes to be used by each individual only once. The same group is now being adopted in the DOST project.

"There was no notable decrease in HIV infections among drug abusers after they were provided with sterilized syringes. Hence oral therapy is being introduced as it is a proven technique the world over," said J K Kosambiya , programme advisor, Surat AIDS prevention and control unit. The project is offered by National AIDS Control (NACO) programme in association with GujaratState AIDS Control Society (GSACS).

EC declares 53 seats as 'expenditure sensitive' for UP polls

The Election Commission has declared 53 assembly seats as "expenditure sensitive" and prone to "high illegal funding and corrupt practices" in poll bound Uttar Pradesh.

A high-level team of the panel has also begun a tour of the state starting today to chalk out preparations in this regard with the Income Tax department and other enforcement authorities for curbing use of illegal funds during polls.

The EC team is expected to meet the Director General of Investigations (Income Tax) and his team in Lucknow to review the deployment of I-T officials in these money 'sensitive' constituencies.

"The EC team is arriving in the state for analysing poll preparedness and checking measures put in place to curb use of money power during elections in the state. A total of 53 constituencies have been declared as expenditure sensitive in Uttar Pradesh which is the largest in all the states going to polls in 2012," a top I-T official said.

Some of the seats identified as "expenditure sensitive" include Lucknow, Mathura, Agra, Gautam Budh Nagar, Mainpuri, Bareilly, Rai Bareilly, Chitrakoot, Gonda, Azamgarh and Gazipur.

According to EC rules, an 'expenditure sensitive constituency' is identified "on the basis of past history, profile of the constituency and the state Chief Election Commissioner's office identifies such seats which are prone to high expenditure and corrupt practices".

We used to tie alcoholics to a pole and beat them up: Anna Hazare

Anti-graft crusader Anna Hazarewas criticized by mainstream political parties on Tuesday for saying he supported the public flogging of alcoholics.

Hazare, whose hunger strike in August against corruption attracted massive nationwide support, told NDTV news channel that corporal punishment had previously been used in his home village in Maharashtra.

"We give three warnings because after all they are our people," he said. "But after the warnings, we drag that person to the temple and make him promise that he will never drink again in his life.

"But even after all this if they continued drinking, we used to tie them to a pole near the temple and beat them up."

The 74-year-old's comments are likely to dent his image as a non-violent activist inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Critics have previously alleged he held extreme views.

"I think the Taliban used to say the same thing," Manish Tewari, spokesperson of the ruling Congress party, said, while the main BJP opposition party said his approach was no way to deal with alcoholism.

Hazare has also come under fire for demanding the death penalty for corrupt officials and is accused of trying to subvert India's parliamentary democracy by using hunger strikes to influence lawmakers.

Maharashtra ATS faces acute staff shortage

Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism SquadATS is grappling with a severe manpower crunch with 283 posts of the total 732 lying vacant, two-and-a-half years after a panel set up to probe state police's response to the Mumbai attacksrecommended streamlining the force.
Of the sanctioned strength of 732 personnel for the ATS, which was formed in 2004 to counter terrorism and probe terror cases, 283 posts or 38.66 per cent of the required manpower are lying vacant as on September 1, 2011, ATS sources told PTI.
Although Maharashtra has borne the brunt of terrorism with six deadly attacks since 1993, including the 26/11 strikes, the state's terror watchdog has only 10 sub inspectors, the cutting edge of the force as they are first to investigate a case as against the sanctioned strength of 90.
The cumulative strength of constables in ATS stands at 354 as against approved 495. The constables are eyes and ears on the ground to gather intelligence inputs, the sources said.
The strength of middle-level officers is no better.
There are only two superintendents of police for the four sanctioned posts, three assistant commissioners of police for the 10 required and 38 Inspectors instead of required strength of 50, the sources added.
In the aftermath of the brutal terror attack on November 26, 2008, the Ram Pradhan Committee in its report submitted in April 2009 had noted that the structure of ATS and its operations was in "somewhat confused state".
On November 26, 2008, Ajmal Amir Kasab and nine aides had landed here by sea and gone on a shooting spree at various places, including the Taj Mahal Hotel, Nariman House, Oberoi Hotel and CST railway station, killing 166 people.

Governor, not CM has final word on AFSPA: Law ministry

EW DELHI: The debate on who will have the final word on lifting the controversial AFSPAfrom some areas of Jammu and Kashmir intensified with the Union law ministry saying the Governor can overrule the recommendation of the state government.

Reversing its stand, the Law Ministry has informed the Union Government that Governor N N Vohra enjoys the power to overrule any decision of the Omar Abdullah government for revoking the Armed Forces Special Powers Act(AFSPA) in the border state.

The Law Ministry's stand is based on the legal opinion given by Attorney General Ghulam Vahanvati in which he is understood to have said that Governor can exercise discretion according to Section 3 of the AFSPA and that he is "entitled" to keep in mind the will of Parliament.

Uttar Pradesh misusing central funds: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday reiterated that the central government's funds for development of Uttar Pradesh were being misused by the Mayawati government and, if voted to power, his party would make the state "number one" in the country.

Rahul on Tuesday embarked upon a mass contact programme ahead of the state assembly polls early next year.

"The poor in the state are not getting the benefits of funds being released for them and the development of Uttar Pradesh. It's because the state government is not bothered about the development of Uttar Pradesh and the poor and downtrodden," Gandhi told a gathering in Barabanki, some 30 km from Lucknow.

Sanjiv Bhatt says SC has opened new doors for him

AHMEDABAD: Even as the Supreme Court refused to grant relief to suspended IPS officerSanjiv Bhatt on Friday, he chose to view the glass as half full. He believed the turning down of his plea by the Supreme Court had opened new doors for him. Talking to TOI, Bhatt said that he could at his liberty now file his objections in a revision petition with the Gujarat high court.

"The SC has permitted me to file an independent revision petition with all my objections, which comes as welcome news for me. As I have already submitted my objections in a petition with the court, in absence of the permission from the SC, it would have been difficult for me to counter the government flip-flop in the case and raise my objections," said Bhatt.

I liked Manmohan Singh when he wasn't PM: LK Advani

PANAJI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani on Wednesday said he liked Manmohan Singh "when he was not the prime minister".
Speaking to reporters in Panaji, the former deputy Prime Minister, who is on a nationwide anti-graft Jan Chetna Yatra, also said calling Singh a weak PM was not a "harsh critique".
"When he was not a Prime Minister I liked him. He served very efficiently as P V Narasimha Rao's finance minister, but we did not expect courage from him then," Advani said sarcastically.
"Calling him a weak PM is not harsh," Advani said adding the country had now realised in retrospect that the BJP's constant castigation of Singh's governance in the past had substance.
"People earlier used to say 'he is an honest man, why do you keep attacking him'. Now they tell me, what the BJP was saying all this while is right," he said.
The BJP leader also said the record of both Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the battle against corruption was "highly unsatisfactory".
Advani also critiqued the Congress' efforts to put the blame for the 2G spectrum scam on United Progressive Alliance (UPA) partner DMK, whose former minister A Raja is in prison on corruption charges.
